Drive Type: Indirect (piston) drive — the captive piston transfers energy to the fastener without the fastener contacting the powder load gases directly. This produces controlled penetration depth, reduces concrete spalling, and prevents ricochet, which is the standard expected from the best powder actuated tool on professional job sites.

A powder actuated tool works by using a controlled explosive charge — called a power load — to drive a hardened steel pin directly into concrete or steel. No drilling, no pre-setting, no anchoring compound. The JH-396 operates on this principle with a direct-fire mechanism, meaning the tool fires only when the muzzle is pressed firmly against the work surface. For operators, this is not just a safety feature — it also ensures the pin enters at the correct angle and depth every time.
One of the most practical decisions on any fastening job is load selection. The JH-396 is compatible with standard .27 caliber strip power loads, which come in varying strengths — typically color-coded from yellow (light) through green, red, and purple (heavy). Matching the load strength to the substrate density is what separates a clean, flush-driven pin from one that either bounces or over-penetrates. Thin steel over a hollow cavity needs a different load than solid reinforced concrete, and getting this right reduces material waste and rework significantly.
The JH-396 is optimized for use with knurled-shank and smooth-shank drive pins across a range of lengths and diameters.
